Thomas Hardy (2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928) was an English poet and novelist. Many of his works are set in the semi-fictional English region of Wessex, and focus on the often tragic struggles and relationships of simple country folk. His novels often met with a negative response from their Victorian readership due to their controversial treatment of sex, religion and marriage. Some argue this led Hardy to give up novel-writing in favour of poetry.
