John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. (27 February 1902 – 20 December 1968) was an American author known for his succinct and evocative prose and his keenly perceived portrayals of American people, especially as applied to downtrodden or ‘everyman’ protagonists. In 1962 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
